Scales can be a useful tool to help monitor changes in weight, but how many times have you stepped on the scales only to see an unexpected and seemingly undeserved jump in the number. It is an occurrence that can send you in a spin and lead to panic and overcorrection – vows to train harder, skipping meals or just general feelings of regret, guilt and shame. The thing you need to know is, that in most cases, sudden sizable increases or decreases in weight in one day are highly unlikely (read- physically impossible) to be an actual fat gain or fat loss. Both processes take time and are more likely to occur at a rate of grams per day, not kilos. So, with that in mind, let’s look at what is going on with these sudden jumps on the scale.
