“Our expectation drives our motivation, and our motivation dictates our outcomes”
What if we were able to improve our outcomes or chances of success on a new endeavour, fitness goal, work task or diet ambition just by changing our expectation? What if just by believing what we should achieve, we can significantly improve our chances of obtaining it?
In psychology, there is a phenomenon called “a self-fulfilling prophecy” in which our outcomes are in line with what we believe they will be, what we deserve or what we are capable of. In practical terms, this would be represented through your expectation of achieving a new skill of desired fitness level. If you have positive expectations your inner dialogue is going to be just that, positive, with repetitive efforts aligned to achieving that goal. This also impacts the way you see your improvements and how you give context to coaching feedback and will acknowledge more supportive and constructive information than criticism. This all leads to the small and subtle behaviour change that underlies success.
