Once again, we have come around to that time of year where millions of people will set themselves a new year’s resolution that will inevitably only last a few weeks and end with little or no change to their previous state. Although in terms of goal setting or behaviour change, the onset of a new starting point, i.e., a new year is a perfect time to make a change, the reason most fail is that they approach it incorrectly or with the wrong motivation.
The common issue with most goals is that they are generally based on avoidance and not understanding the circumstances and behaviours that led to the current outcomes.
If we take on a challenge, that both scares and excites us, that has meaning, align to who we are and our values we are able to shift from the trivial and salient issues in our lives and focus on taking on the challenge, resulting in positive changes in our behaviour, our mental strength, our emotional state and ultimately our outcomes and satisfaction with our lives and who we are.
So, for 2022, rather than focus on a narrow resolution, seek out a challenge, something that is worth getting out of bed for, something that scares you. Once you focus on a challenge, it will change how you see opportunity vs threat, allowing you to focus on solving real problems and what was previously a cause of your pain will become trivial.
