Not Every Piece of Nutrition Information is Relevant to You
One week the message is ‘cut out all meat’, the next week it’s ‘eat steak and only steak’. Then there is the guy on Instagram who provided a reference to a journal article to back up his claim that artificial sweeteners cause obesity – so it must be legit right? If you want to move past nutrition confusion and towards understanding, then you need to know about the term Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).
Nutrition advice should be grounded in evidence and also checked for relevance and usefulness. Whilst there is a lot of very compelling nutrition information out there not every piece will be relevant to you. Knowing this alone will help to demystify the at times confusing nutrition information landscape. The trick is to take an evidence-based approach – get an understanding of what the big picture looks like for any given topic and then stand back and assess whether this information is likely to move you closer to, or further away, from your health and fitness goals.
