2020 was a year that exposed a number of shortcomings about the reliance of comfort on humanity. The presence of a perceived threat to our health spread fear throughout our society and caused behaviour that was both irrational and bizarre. One of these shortcomings was our ability to step up in times of challenge, not just being resilient but having the level of mental fortitude that would allow an individual to lean into the disruption created during this period.
As we are unable to foresee any potential calamity that may unfold in 2021 and beyond, this year I am going to focus on building not just resilience but the level of mental tenacity that underlies the capacity to actively comfort any adversity that presents itself before you. So, over the next few months, I will lay out the current evidence-based research on the understanding, mechanisms, interventions and strategies around increasing your mental strength and capacity for challenge.
