Fitness outcomes, goal setting, career paths and even weight management are all generally done along the lines of linear thinking and a straight-line path determination. Even our school and educational path is considered a linear transition from one level of academic achievement to the next, resulting in a seamless transition into the job of our dreams. Which is then followed by a linear promotional path awaiting the salary we deserve in parallel to our relational path. We plan as though there are a logical number of steps along a nice straight line that as we hit each step or knock over each domino then we just move smoothly to the next.
The reality is that the path is never a straight line from A to B or where we are right now to where we want to be. Despite planning and thinking that it is a straight path, we need to understand that there will be times and events where our progress will accelerate, and we will achieve beyond what we expected for that point in time. During these periods it is easy for us to maintain momentum and can be tricked into believing that these are the results we can continue to expect, or that the behaviours that got us to this point, are the same ones that will get us continued success.
